They're like buttons with no labels. My friends list isn't too big so I am in the process of just double-tapping the blank space, seeing what page it is and going back to label the button accordingly. You can still flick left and right through these unlabelled buttons so you just have to keep track of which one you double-tapped so you know which one to label. It's still a major pain in the butt though -- especially if you do have larger friends lists.
