You may have to scroll back through your old messages. If you've double tapped on the message from that person, and you're now viewing your conversation with that person then only the last few messages may be visible on the screen. If you flick right through the content on that screen, you'll just see your last message or two. To get to older messages, get to the first message on the screen and then start flicking left. this will scroll you back through your older messages.
