Hi all,
AIPoly (pronounced A I Poly) was released a couple of days ago;
unfortunately the announcement ended up in my spam folder, so I only
saw it this morning.
For anyone who doesn't remember, a few months ago, AIPoly received a
fairly large amount of media coverage with the usual hard-hitting
headlines like "app allows blind people to see" and then as is usually
the case we heard next to nothing about it. However, unlike most other
projects like this, the app is actually available in the app store
right now & it does sort of work.
Here is a good article that gives some background:

I'm not one for writing up lengthy tutorials, but since I found the
app a bit confusing I've provided some pointers below:
After you have swiped through the tutorial you will be on the main
screen. To start recognizing objects, point the device at an object
and press the "toggle AIPoly" button. You will receive no feedback
what so ever. When this button is pressed the device will constantly
be trying to recognize things - E.G. you are able to move the device
around & it will automatically try to recognize whatever is in front
of it.
After a few seconds, feel just under the middle of the screen and you
should find out what AIPoly thinks the object is. If focus remains on
this element future objects will sometimes be spoken but sometimes
not, so it's best to keep feeling around the same area.
The "pencil" button is used to teach AIPoly about an object although
I've yet to give this a go.
For me, it takes about 5 seconds for an object to be recognized, but
as I say, you receive no feedback at all, so it's hard to know when
it's safe to move the phone away and when a result is returned.
The app definitely has a lot of potential and since it's free you
can't really beat the price, but the user experience needs quite a bit
of work.
Cheers,
Ben.
