In terms of cubic feet most front loaders are quite a bit smaller, but for the
most part you can put in just as much clothing because front loaders can be
filled up almost entirely whereas most top loaders while having a bigger
capacity have that agitator post in the middle which greatly reduces the
capacity. I know some of the new ones don't have it any more, but I question
the effectiveness in washing well since in a drum that spins like a dryers the
cloth is tumbled around a lot more. Anyhow, for a regular home most front
loaders are plenty big and if you live in an apartment and need a compact set
they definitely outperform the top loaders.

The front loading machines I've had have always had greater capacity than the
top loading machines I used to have.
