One thing I thought of buying is that service called ITether. I think you launch some site on the phone and then use a client on the computer that connects to an ad-hock network the phone makes. I believe Sprint wants $50 a month for a separate bucket of 5 gigs, which is about what I believe they charge for the broadband USB sticks. If I only want to use it a few weeks a year spread out, paying $50 for each of those weeks doesn't make sense.

No it will switch and you can turn it off from the tethering with your Mac or any other device.

If I set this up, will I always have wy-fy with my mack? Will it always use my data from my phone plan?

It's elementary.
In settings directly below "wifi" is "personal hotspot"
It likely says off.
Enter there and follow the prompts.

Verizon has tethering free but I haven't figured out how to do it either.

Hi all.
How would I set my iPhone 4S as a personal wy-fy hotspot that I can connect my Mack to? I have wy-fy at home but not anywhere else. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
