Hello Wren, As for third-party cables, I cannot advise you as I only use Apple accessories with my Apple devices.
However, as for the visual voicemail problem, it may simply be a matter of data corruption. Were it me, I would: 1. Dial into my A T & T voicemail system from a landline and delete all of the messages. I realize that this may seem a bit drastic but, nevertheless, it is what I would do. 2. Another thing to try is to sign out of the visual voicemail system from the phone. If you cannot figure out how to sign out from the phone, then I would call into the voicemail system, again via a landline, and change the access password. Finally, I would reboot the phone upon which the phone will prompt you to enter the new voicemail access password. An apple support person said that the Apple cables have microchips in them, which I believe, identify them as true Apple Cables.
