It’s a lightning cable as the rowing machine monitor sends data to an app on the phone. I usually plug in headphones to hear what is going on but that’s separate from the lightning cable.

Is it simply a 3.5mm connection to give you audio through speakers on your rowing machine or is it a USB connection using the Lightning cable? If it’s strictly audio, it most likely that your headphone volume has dropped to 0. To fix it, make sure you are on the home screen when you plug it in, once plugged in do a 2-finger swipe up or down on the screen to start Voiceover reading the screen and then repeatedly press the volume up button.
