I've not seen the second type yet, but that should credit your apple account
directly without a redemption process, like a phone
topup card. you just get notified it is done. i'd like one of those if it
works that straight forwardly.
I guess you'd have to associate card with account first for it to work, mind.

Subject: RE: read deeming an iTunes gift card using the phone's camera

Hello Jen,

Generally speaking, there are two types of iTunes gift cards. The first type
of gift card is sold with a pre-paid amount already
established on the card. For example, were you in a store such as Target, the
card would be hanging on a display with an amount
such as $25, $50, or $100 printed on it.

The second type of card is, effectively a blank card which, the purchaser would
have the cashier charge at the time of checkout.
This type of card can have any amount on it for example, $41.27.

Let's assume that you have a fixed-amount gift card. In order to have the
phone's camera automatically detect the card, you must
first remove a very tiny strip of paper from the card. This strip of paper
covers a series of numbers that, along with the bar
code, already printed on the card, allows for auto-detection. It can sometimes
be a little tricky locating an removing this strip
of paper. Keep in mind that there is no data/information located on the paper
itself. It merely covers a code that is printed on
the gift card.

So, now that you've removed the strip of paper, simply lay the card on a flat
surface and, assuming that you have selected to use
the camera in order to redeem the card, just point the camera at the card. The
acquisition process takes less than 3 seconds. Make
certain there is sufficient lighting in the room.

I have never tried to redeem the second type of gift card--the one that is
charged at the time of checkout so don't know if that
type can be redeemed by the camera.

Good luck and enjoy your gift.

Mark
