What's the purpose of the suction tape?  Is this the sticky surface on
the inside of the flat top shelf that's opposite of where your phone
sits?

I seem to have gotten the stand working, although it still makes
errors such as reading "United Scales" instead of "United States".  I
guess OCR will never be perfect.  Thanks for your help.
