I am in portrait view, and here is what I do:

To go to the next app, I place four of my fingers on the left side of the 
screen, with a little space between each finger.  And yes, it is ok to place 
your fingers directly on the screen.
I then  just drag my fingers to the right across the screen.

Now it will not cycle around, so when you get to the last app going left to 
right, you then must go right to left to go back.  So the gesture goes both 
ways.
The only app I have trouble with is MBraille, but all other ones work fine for 
me.
