I would recommend using the VIP mailbox available in the mail app. The VIP allows you to add people that you will receive messages from that you do not want to miss. You can also turn on notifications for your VIP mailbox, so it has a particular sound when you get a message from one of the people you have assigned to your VIP mailbox, and you will also get a notification on your lock screen as well as in the notification screen. To me, this is what you are looking for.
To add someone to the VIP mailbox, you can do it one of two ways: First, in a message you received from that person, double tap on their name at the top of the screen. On that screen just tap add to VIP, and they will automatically be added to your VIP list. The second way: Open the mail app, swipe until you hear VIP and double tap. Now, swipe until you hear Add to VIP. This will bring up your contacts. Just swipe to the person you want to add and double tap their name. It will then add them to your VIP list and put you back in the VIP folder in the mail app. Now also, in VIP in the mail app, you can just double tap on VIP alerts to bring up the notification screen for VIP. This is where you would change the sound if you want, plus adjust any of the other notification settings. I hope this information has been helpful.
