If you want to keep track of the data usage, you can reset the data statistics 
the beginning of your billing cycle. I have discovered that this information 
does not match my providers usage data. So it is not 100% accurate not sure if 
it is on the providers side of things or the iPhone usage data technology. I 
suggest you have your provider send you notifications of your data usage.
