This is one of those things where Apple could include some sort of gesture where you could double tap and hold on the letter on the top row and slide up or down to access its corresponding number. This way it wouldn't interfear with any alternative letters I.E. umlauts or accents by sliding left or right and also make it a bit faster when typing.
