You have to use iTunes but yes you can rip your CD collection. I have only about 60 or 70 CDs but I ripped them all using iTunes quite some time ago and only consider my CDs as backup copies sense I bought and paid for the disks. When I want to get new music I just get it through iTunes even on my iPhone and get them downloaded directly to my iPhone. Then the next time I sync with iTunes, they get added to my library.
