I don't think there is another way. I find it easiest to clean up the contacts in Outlook and then resync.

Unfortunately my Outlook contacts are a jungle of insanity, three and four different and the same email addresses for one person, etc. Going through them one by one and deleting each one per the above process is quite time-consuming.
