If the screen is clean and all that and it is so unreliable then you can try a full restore and set up as a new phone, if that doesn't fix it then it definitely sounds like a defect and should be covered under Apple's warranty even if you didn't buy Apple Care Plus. You say the phone is a 6S so even if you got it on day 1 it's only a bit over 7 months old and it does have a 1-year warranty.
