Hi Daniel, I don't know about others, but for me this work-around is not working, double tap and hold and then letting go when the tone sounds does nothing on my 6S Plus and neither does split-tapping or anything else with Voiceover running. The only work-around which works for me is to turn Voiceover off, then tap the search field and start Voiceover up again. I find this is not very difficult to do since you can orient on the mute switch, the search box on my 6S Plus is just on the screen next to the mute switch and I can tap it everytime I tried.
