And if shift is on then Voiceover will say "Cap" when you touch a letter so if you want an upper case letter and it doesn't say "Cap" before it announces the letter you touch then it is not on. Keep in mind that when you are in touch typing mode touching and releasing shift will capitalize the next letter you write, but then it goes back to lower case. If you need several upper case characters one after another you have to either touch shift each time or you can touch it and then triple tap which turns on Caps Lock and then it will write upper case letters until you again touch the shift key once and release it which turns Caps Lock off.
