Russ, You do not have to use iTunes file sharing, but that is one option, frankly made ridiculously difficult in iTunes 12.
The Open In, or DropBox are much easier and more direct. Yes you can; the process for getting the book into VDR would be First upload the book to Dropbox, which you must have on your PC and then on your phone; once there, go into VDR and where it says Add, and from there Dropbox; Search in your Dropbox on your phone, double-tap on the book which must be zipped in order for voiceDream to transfer it into the app, and wait until VoiceDream says the book is ready.
