You can use it like a phone and hold it to your ear or use it as a speakerphone both with the built-in microphone. I am not sure if the current iPods come with the fully functional Earpods like an iPhone which have the in-line microphone and remote control on the headset cable or if they just come with a headset that doesn't include a microphone. I bought a fifth generation iPod for my wife early in 2013 and it only came with a headset without microphone. If you use it a lot for Voip chats buying a set of the Apple Earpods with microphone for $30 or $35 is going to be the best investment you can make because for the price they are awesome.
