Hi!
I'll reply on this one but this is a joint reply to Sieghard, Anne and Sandra.
I have some sight left, something between 2 and 5 percent, that's what doctors are saying. I can see the picture on the screen, distinguish icons, even recognize some apps by its icon. Can't read the text below icons or messages etc but I can see clearly enough to see the object I'm shooting in the field of view.
I tested KNFB Reader on my old 4S (thanks to a buddy who bought it) and I was testing Textgrabber back then and now on my 6S Plus.
OK, I can understand why KNFB Reader didn't work for me well. It was never meant to be used on 4S and it didn't support my language and as a matter of fact, it still doesn't.
However, Textgrabber which actually supports my language gave me more less the same results as the KNFB Reader at the time. Few days ago I tried Textgrabber again on my 6S Plus and I got very badly recognized text.
I'm not saying OCR like this is impossible for the blind, I'm just saying even sighted folks can't keep their arms and hands steady enough to shoot quality pictures for OCR. Getting a stand is a much reliable solution and if I ever find hundreed bucks for KNFB I'll certainly manage to find additional twenty for Fopydo. In fact, I'm thinking of buying it these days since I have Textgrabber and Voice apps. KNFB Reader is on my wish list but not before it begins to support Croatian.

S poštovanjem

Hi Gordon,

I would like to add my voice to Anne's here! I think it was both she and I who first championed the use of Prizmo, some years  back, using the old 4 phone!! Certainly, at first it was a challenge, but we did get some results which would, at the very least, give one a good over-view of what was on the paper. When the KNFB app came out, or rather, when the hype leading up to its coming out, was at its hottest and they said "we won't be charging a lot for it", only to then announce that it would cost a wacking 100 Dollars, I decided I would never buy it, seeing it as one more example of the "rip-off" of the adaptive market. However, within a day or so of its appearing on the app store, I read sufch glowing reports of the app that I swallowed my pride and bought it. I have found it to be truly liberating! True, in those days I could see enough to tell if the targeted sheet was roughly on the screen, which helped emensely! but now, and for the last 2 years, I have had no sight at all, not even light, which used to be so useful in gaging the right ambience for taking shots, I am within 5 percent of my earlier success.

I take shots, on the fly, such as in restaurants, from a sitting position, just raising one hand, not making any special effort, (not choosing to make too much of an exhibition of myself) of menus and have splendid success! I always am the one to check the post, before my other half, this used to drive him mad when I was using Prizmo, because it took quite a while to get results, but now, the the KNFB app, I am as quick as him putting on his reading glasses! Once the envelope is opened, KNFB is faster than he is at reading it for me (and often more accurate!!)

I do agree with Anne, it may well help some of us, who have seen before, having an instinctive awareness of the requirements of the camera, but this isn't true of everyone, people, here on this list, have achieved equal results, having never seen!

Finally, for those who just have disappointing results, I wish I could give them some one to one tips, but I think it might be necessary to be actually present. Because, I reckon there are tricks a methods which one can follow and which don't need judgement or too much spacial awareness.

Just my twopence worth.

Sandy.

Gordon, I have to disagree with you. For several years now, I have had very good results freehand first with Prizmo and now with KNFBReader and I’m totally blind. I think what makes the difference is whether we have good spacial awareness or not. I was able to see perfectly as a young child, and although I’ve seen nothing at all for around 55 years, my visual memory is good. This helps me understand how to use apps with the camera.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi!
Whatever people are saying, I never believed in ferrytales. Blind people acurately scanning text documents on the fly is just a ferrytale to me.
I managed to get some decent results with KNFB Reader and Textgrabber but those were third or fourth shots in both apps. Giving hundreed bucks for KNFB Reader just to get some partial results is too much for me; fortunately, Textgrabber went free and now has in-app purchases for translations.
Without a decent phone stand such as Fopydo or something else there's no purpose in acquiring OCR apps and that's my humble opinion.

Hi Joe, unfortunately, I couldn’t get Amedia to work reliably. Occasionally, when my phone’s camera was pointed at a printed page, one or two partial lines of text would be read aloud, generally in incomplete form. I sought sighted assistance to make sure that I was in fact aligning the camera and the document correctly and was told that the image was in fact being displayed on the screen. I also tried Amedia and KNFB Reader side by side with two documents, again with sighted assistance, and KNFB performed OCR correctly whereas Amedia only read a couple lines of garbled text. Like you, I have some trouble with KNFB Reader also, but in my case I know that’s because I have difficulty aligning the camera with the page perfectly. I don’t think there’s any question that you’ll get better results with KNFB Reader though. For live text recognition, Talking Goggles does a reasonable enough job so at least you’ll know what document you’re holding. It requires an internet connection to work, but there’s a free, ad-supported version.

I accessed my receipt for Amedia Live Reader from the iTunes Store and reported that the app wasn’t functioning for me, but I wasn’t offered a refund.

Hope this helps,

Grant

Hi, what have people's experience been with Amedia Live Reader? The
real-time reading function sounds intriguing, but the price tag gives one
pause. I don't mind the investment though if people can show it's an
effective app. I'm an idiot and cannot seem to make the KNFB Reader app work
wel for me, and yeah, I fully admit this could just be user error. Thanks
for your thoughts in advance.
