Hi Gordan, I totally understand how KNFB Reader is not valuable to you if it doesn’t support your language. However, I am completely blind with not even any light perception and I can guaranty that if I have a page of printed material that isn’t too difficult in terms of maybe crazy colours with little contrast or a very complicated layout with lots of pictures and captions, I can get a virtually perfect scan using KNFB Reader freehand. I did at one point some years ago before KNFB Reader was even available buy a Standscan, but it’s sitting on a shelf in my office and I haven’t used it since KNFB Reader was released. Of course you could say I didn’t do this with KNFB Reader, but I guaranty I did. The below is a scan from the manual of a new dishwasher we bought and it is done freehand with KNFB Reader. I didn’t correct any actual scanning screw-ups like where for example it says “Bsh” instead of “Bosch” right at the beginning and there are a few elsewhere, but I did put in a few blank lines where KNFB either didn’t recognize this or maybe there really weren’t any, but as I am reading such documents I would normally format them the way I want in terms of line breaks and paragraphs. I also scanned the book which has pages that are about half the size of a regular page sideways and that way I could scan in portrait and get both pages at the same time. I used the automatic mode which is normally recommended for scanning stands. I find it works well for me since I put the phone on the page at which point it says “Lens covered”, once I have it lined up I quickly raise it about 30 cm or a bit more above the page, KNFB then announces “Text Found, hold still” and automatically takes the picture. Here now the first few pages I scanned:

Use this dishwasher only for its intended function, which is the washing of household dishware and kitchenware. Use only detergents or rinsing agents recommended for use in a dishwasher, and keep them out of the reach of children. When loading items to be washed: • Locate sharp items so they are not likely to damage the door seal. • Load knives and other sharp utensils with their HANDLES UP to reduce the risk of cut-type injuries. • Do not wash plastic items unless they are marked "dishwasher safe" or the equivalent. For plastic items not so marked, check the manufacturer's recommendations. • Do not operate your dishwasher unless all enclosure panels are in place. • Do not tamper with or override controls and interlocks. Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be produced in a hot water system that has not been used for two weeks or more. Hydro- gen gas is explosive. Before using a dishwasher that is connected to a hot water system that has been unused for two weeks or longer, turn on all hot water faucets and let the water flow from each for several minutes. This will release any accumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is explosive, do not smoke or use an open flame during this time. Remove the dishwasher door to the washing compartment when removing an old dishwasher for service or discarding. To avoid floor damage and possible mold growth, do not allow wet areas to remain around or under the dishwasher. Protect your dishwasher from the elements. Protect against freez- ing to avoid possible damage to the fill valve. Damage caused by freezing is not covered by the warranty. S^^Ste This appliance must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. This appli- ance is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding con ductor. • Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or service representative if you are in doubt whether the appliance is properly grounded. Some items are not dishwasher safe and should be hand washed; others require special loading. Recommended Aluminum: Colored anodized aluminum may fade over time. Minerals in your water may cause the aluminum to darken or spot. This can usually be removed with a soap-filled steel wool pad. China, Crystal, Stoneware: Some hand-painted utensils may discolor, fade or spot. Hand wash these utensils. Position fragile glassware so that it will not topple over or come in contact with other utensils during the wash cycle. Glass: Milk glass may discolor or become yellow. Non-stick Coatings: Apply a light coating of vegetable oil to non-stick sur- faces after drying. Plastics: Make sure the plasticware is dishwasher safe. Stainless Steel, Sterling Silver and Silver Plates: Load these so they do not come in contact with other metals. Acrylic: Crazing or small cracks throughout the acrylic, may occur. Adhesive-Joined Pieces: Adhesives that join materials such as plastic wood, bone, steel copper, tin, etc. may loosen. Bone-Handled Utensils: Handles may separate. Iron: Iron will rust. Hand wash and dry immediately. Non-Dishware Items: Your dishwasher is intended for use in cleaning ONLY standard household dishware and kitchenware. Pewter, Brass, Bronze: These items will tarnish. Hand wash and dry immedi- ately. Tin: Tin will stain. Hand wash and dry immediately. Wood: Wooden bowls, wooden utensils and utensils with wooden handles can crack, warp and lose their finish. Loading the Dishwasher Do not pre-wash items with loosely attached soiling. Remove all food parti- cles, bones, toothpicks and excessive grease. Items having burned-on, baked-on or starchy soils may require some pretreatment. Refer to the Dishware Materials section for more information about dishware suitability. Load only dishwasher safe items into the dishwasher. Load dishes in the dishwasher racks so the insides of bowls, pots and pans are facing the spray arms. Avoid nesting and contact points between dishes. Separate items of dissimilar metals. Loading the Upper Rack Ensure items do not protrude through the bottom of the racks and block the spray arms. Note: When pushing the upper rack into the dishwasher, push it until it stops against the back of the tub so the upper rack spray arm connects to the water supply at the back of the tub. Do not push racks in using the door. Loading the Bottom Rack Place large items in the bottom rack. Load pots, pans and bowls upside down. Do not block vent with tall baking sheets. Load these items on the right side of the dishwasher. Unloading the Dishwasher When unloading the dishwasher, it is best to unload the bottom rack first. Next, unload the silverware basket followed by the upper rack and then the 3rd Rack. I'll reply on this one but this is a joint reply to Sieghard, Anne and Sandra. I have some sight left, something between 2 and 5 percent, that's what doctors are saying. I can see the picture on the screen, distinguish icons, even recognize some apps by its icon. Can't read the text below icons or messages etc but I can see clearly enough to see the object I'm shooting in the field of view. I tested KNFB Reader on my old 4S (thanks to a buddy who bought it) and I was testing Textgrabber back then and now on my 6S Plus. OK, I can understand why KNFB Reader didn't work for me well. It was never meant to be used on 4S and it didn't support my language and as a matter of fact, it still doesn't. However, Textgrabber which actually supports my language gave me more less the same results as the KNFB Reader at the time. Few days ago I tried Textgrabber again on my 6S Plus and I got very badly recognized text. I'm not saying OCR like this is impossible for the blind, I'm just saying even sighted folks can't keep their arms and hands steady enough to shoot quality pictures for OCR. Getting a stand is a much reliable solution and if I ever find hundreed bucks for KNFB I'll certainly manage to find additional twenty for Fopydo. In fact, I'm thinking of buying it these days since I have Textgrabber and Voice apps. KNFB Reader is on my wish list but not before it begins to support Croatian. I think it was both she and I who first championed the use of Prizmo, some years back, using the old 4 phone!! Certainly, at first it was a challenge, but we did get some results which would, at the very least, give one a good over-view of what was on the paper. When the KNFB app came out, or rather, when the hype leading up to its coming out, was at its hottest and they said "we won't be charging a lot for it", only to then announce that it would cost a wacking 100 Dollars, I decided I would never buy it, seeing it as one more example of the "rip-off" of the adaptive market. However, within a day or so of its appearing on the app store, I read sufch glowing reports of the app that I swallowed my pride and bought it. I have found it to be truly liberating! True, in those days I could see enough to tell if the targeted sheet was roughly on the screen, which helped emensely! but now, and for the last 2 years, I have had no sight at all, not even light, which used to be so useful in gaging the right ambience for taking shots, I am within 5 percent of my earlier success. I take shots, on the fly, such as in restaurants, from a sitting position, just raising one hand, not making any special effort, (not choosing to make too much of an exhibition of myself) of menus and have splendid success! I always am the one to check the post, before my other half, this used to drive him mad when I was using Prizmo, because it took quite a while to get results, but now, the the KNFB app, I am as quick as him putting on his reading glasses! Once the envelope is opened, KNFB is faster than he is at reading it for me (and often more accurate!!) I do agree with Anne, it may well help some of us, who have seen before, having an instinctive awareness of the requirements of the camera, but this isn't true of everyone, people, here on this list, have achieved equal results, having never seen! Finally, for those who just have disappointing results, I wish I could give them some one to one tips, but I think it might be necessary to be actually present. Because, I reckon there are tricks a methods which one can follow and which don't need judgement or too much spacial awareness. Just my twopence worth. For several years now, I have had very good results freehand first with Prizmo and now with KNFBReader and I’m totally blind. I think what makes the difference is whether we have good spacial awareness or not. I was able to see perfectly as a young child, and although I’ve seen nothing at all for around 55 years, my visual memory is good. This helps me understand how to use apps with the camera. Blind people acurately scanning text documents on the fly is just a ferrytale to me. I managed to get some decent results with KNFB Reader and Textgrabber but those were third or fourth shots in both apps. Giving hundreed bucks for KNFB Reader just to get some partial results is too much for me; fortunately, Textgrabber went free and now has in-app purchases for translations. Without a decent phone stand such as Fopydo or something else there's no purpose in acquiring OCR apps and that's my humble opinion. Occasionally, when my phone’s camera was pointed at a printed page, one or two partial lines of text would be read aloud, generally in incomplete form. I sought sighted assistance to make sure that I was in fact aligning the camera and the document correctly and was told that the image was in fact being displayed on the screen. I also tried Amedia and KNFB Reader side by side with two documents, again with sighted assistance, and KNFB performed OCR correctly whereas Amedia only read a couple lines of garbled text. Like you, I have some trouble with KNFB Reader also, but in my case I know that’s because I have difficulty aligning the camera with the page perfectly. I don’t think there’s any question that you’ll get better results with KNFB Reader though. For live text recognition, Talking Goggles does a reasonable enough job so at least you’ll know what document you’re holding. It requires an internet connection to work, but there’s a free, ad-supported version. I accessed my receipt for Amedia Live Reader from the iTunes Store and reported that the app wasn’t functioning for me, but I wasn’t offered a refund.
