Mary, It looks to me tthat the Yelp app only searches locally. I looked at support and didn't find a way to ask a question or to request a feature. I couldn't even find a way to change cities. I'm not logged in, so I don't know if that makes a difference.
I would suggest Safari and search for restaurants in that city. Not helpful, but there you have it.
