In my case, I zip the files for the following reason:
It keeps the group of files in one place. Example, I’m currently listening to
Yours Truly Johnny Dollor cd 15 and Suspense cd 31. Johnny dollar is one zip
file and the other zip file is suspense.

Two interesting things I've found with VDR.
1. You don't have to zip up your mp3 files to to get them into VDR. It's great
if a book has lots of small files that are only a few minutes long, but if
they're longer files, like those from GrapicAudio, I don't bother zipping them.
I just stick the mp3's into Dropbox and follow the same process as you would
for adding a zipped book into VDR.
2. VDR can apparently handle m4a files. I have a sample of Ivona Amy that
someone (I think it was Richard Turner from this list) gave me, and it's in m4a.

If you sync your phone with iTunes, you can tell iTunes that certain
files are to be treated as books. You can even set things up so that your
iPhone remembers the position in the file. If you select multiple files at
once, you can even do the changes in batches. I think the command to get into
the info editor thing is still control+i. Hope this helps.
Like another poster mentioned, you can always put the books as a zip file
into Dropbox and open them in Voice Dream Reader. Also, if the book only has a
few files, and they're quite long, you can always just drop the mp3's directly
into Dropbox without zipping them first, then import them into VDR. I do this
with GraphicAudio books, which tend to have rather long files.
