There’s another thing you can check before you call: Go into Settings, and into Notifications, and then go down through all the apps until you come to Phone and go into the Phone settings for notifications by double tapping it. In here you have a lot of control over the different types of phone notifications, so make sure they are all set to “on”. My answer to you is that you do actively have to check for the presence of voice mail, nothing is going to happen automatically which will bring it to your attention. You can ask Siri to “list new voice mail” when you get back to your phone after a period where you were away or had it switched off, or you can check the notifications by pulling down the notifications center (by touching the statusbar at the top, then using the 3-finger swipe down VoiceOver jesture), or you can look at the “phone” item in the “dock” at the bottom of the home screen (if you have any voice mail it will show up there).
