To add to the correct info that Sieghard provided, there are also SD
card readers that have lightning ports. The restriction Sieghard
mentioned with having to be in a dedicated app still applies, though.

If it is to expand the overall memory of your iDevice for apps and other
data, then there isn't really any way of doing this. If you want to
have the external hard drive to play media content, like movies or
music, then you could always get those external har drives that you
could connect to through wi-fi, download the manufacturer's app and play
the content that way.
I personally have not done this but I do have a good friend of mine
that does. While commuting on the bus, he plays movies and music from
this hard drive through the manufacturer's app, but whether the app is
accessible, I don't really know.

I was looking around on Amazon and I’ve found external portable hard
drives for Macs, but they don’t mention whether I could use them with
an iPad.
Is that feasible? I’d like to expand my storage. A 1TB drive would be
just great, but 500GB would be okay.
