Hi, What I don't like about the "Works with Nest" is that it seems to be in direct competition to what works with Apple Home Kit. I am invested in iOS on that front and want to keep it that way which is also one reason why I haven't bought an Amazon Echo yet. I love the idea of the Eccho and I'm impressed with demos I listened to, but it's not even officially available in Canada and that seems to apply to many Amazon services/devices. Amazon offers Prime membership here, but it lacks several components which it has in the US and which in my view make it worthwhile. I have the thermostats from RadioThermostat.com and was probably one of the first to buy them about 4 years ago and they have worked well and the app is quite accessible. I haven't checked yet as to whether they are planning to support Home Kit which would be awesome since it would then soon allow me to use SIRI to raise or lower the temperature.

Also, if the Nest is having a problem in accessing your wifi network (along with the initial setup of access to your wifi network) requires a sighted person to directly enter info into the Nest thermostat. This being said, if you have a good relationship with a friend or your hvac installer, it could be that this only needs to be done once and from then on you could manipulate things fine via Echo and/or the Nest app. The Echo has some built-in Nest commands, but just want to make others aware that there are skills (such as one named Thermostat), which you can run even while using the built-in commands, which offer additional functionality in controlling the Nest. The Thermostat skill for instance offers the "check status" command which will tell you what the temperature is at the thermostat, and what it is set to; it can also be asked about the humidity level. A friend of mine uses an Echobee thermostat instead of a Nest, because he says it integrates better with the Echo (but I don't know anything about it, and he's not that close of a friend where I can ask him a lot of questions). There are a lot of home automation products which integrate with the Nest, using it's detection of your "home" or "away" status to cue them off as to what to do and when to do it, so the Nest offers real advantages; you can check these out by working through the nest.com web site and going through their "works with Nest" database. The Nest Protect smoke detector is also a very nice device, one reason is that it speaks any alarm condition instead of making beep sounds (it may say "a little smoke in the kitchen" for instance). It also integrates with the Nest thermostat to help it know when you're home (if you buy the one wired into your electric power). It also lights up a bright light if there's smoke detected.
