If you want to do bar code recognition, any OCR, not deal with sluggish apps or 
web browsing, then certainly upgrade to the 4S or the 5.
The improved processing speed alone would be a big help, but the better camera 
will make all the difference in object recognition, bar code scanning and OCR.  
You should be able to identify money with the 3GS.

I won't know what iOS 6 will do on a 3GS until I see someone who upgrades.  I 
can't imagine it won't put a strain on the processor.

Also, with the 4S or the 5, you will get SIRI, which can be a nice feature.
