Maybe my Messages app works differently from the other repliers but when I open a message thread, the components of it are listed from oldest to newest with the most recent at the bottom, not the top of the screen. If you find focus at the top or on the oldest part of the thread, place focus on the leftmost button on the bottomline menu and swipe left once. This should move you to the bottom or most recent message in the thread.
