Hello, Since your wife can speak German, following is a great resource for all infamiliar with the crazy prepaid system there -yes, nearly every supermarket chain has a carrier, there are offers for people coming from foreign countries etc.

It seems impossible to get more than 5 gb while on prepaid. You can get Alditalk sims and refill cards at every Aldi supermarket - they are to be found just about everywhere. There are also offers focused on international calling - not sure if they cover the US. I'm using Lebara where for €30 I've got 1000 minutes to the EU and 3 gb of data or 500 minutes and 5 gb. There are other offers like Blauworld or Lyca Mobile too. You've got to research on the website above.
