Hi Kirsten, It, (meaning your results) may vary from say, a 3GS to a 4S perhaps since it depends on pinpoint timing in my experience.
On my 4S I double-tap-&-Hold, wait for the tri-tone and while it is still sounding I do a quick swipe to the right. This only works about 80% of the time and the timing of the last part of the gesture seems to be the key, it has to be almost "frantic" for lack of a better description. And this is one continuous gesture without a finger lift inbetween. Once I get my 3GS back from the person who borrowed it way too long ago I'll try the same thing with the slower processor and report my findings. It's not you but the gesture seems about as consistent as do the ones pertaining to the rotor. The rotor will cooperate 90% of the time and sometimes twisting it one direction works better than the other. But hey, 90's better than 80 so maybe the Apple gods are smiling down on us some days after all. Now if I could just talk Siri into doing that part . . .
