The iPhone speaker volume is independent from the speaker volume of the headset jack, did you try to simply press the volume up button several times with the speaker connected and something playing? The volume may just have dropped to 0%.

When I plug the phone into an external speaker using the headphone jack I get no sound. I have tried with two different cables and three different speakers and get no sound. The jack still works with earbuds. This issue arose as I was listening to the World Series. The game was playing and then stopped.
