Hi List,

I got my new iPhone 7 today and decided to document the steps followed in
setting it up and restoring an encrypted iTunes backup. I want to thank
Jonathan Mosen for his excellent Blindside podcast on unboxing his iPhone 7
Plus which I listened to again yesterday in anticipation of getting my new
phone. I thought a written list might be helpful to some although it is a
bit long. The list follows my signature.

I was pleased that all my apps downloaded from my computer to the new phone
after running a sync in iTunes. Even apps such as Fleksy VO which are no
longer available in the Apps Store downloaded with no problems and quickly.
My biggest adjustment to the iPhone 7 is going to be the haptic home button.
It really feels more like the phone is shifting in the case when this button
is pressed instead of like a button being engaged. I'm sure I'll get used to
it after a while.

Here are the steps I followed to set up my new iPhone 7 purchased online
from Apple and restore my encrypted iTunes backup of my iPhone 6:

1. Reviewed my most recent list of app updates to ensure all had been
downloaded to my computer using iTunes.

2. Connected my iPhone 6 to my Windows 7 computer and opened iTunes
version 12.5.1.21. This is one version back from the current iTunes 12.5.2
and should be current enough to successfully restore an encrypted backup to
a new iPhone 7.

3. From the iTunes menu, selected File, Devices, Transfer purchases
from iPhone to ensure all media purchased on my iPhone was properly
downloaded to my computer.

4. Synced and did an encrypted backup of my iPhone 6 within iTunes.

5. Opened my Keepass passwords manager to ensure my encrypted backup
password was listed and to copy it to my computer clipboard.

6. Opened the shipping box containing the iPhone 7. The box was
sealed along the bottom front edge and opened like a hinged trunk after the
tape was cut. The iPhone box was shrink wrapped to the floor layer of the
shipping box and this layer also pivots. Apple really puts a lot of thought
not only into its products but the containers in which they ship.

7. After using a pocket knife to cut the shrink wrap, removed the film
around the iPhone box. This film had a tab at the top edge of the box and
easily pulled off not unlike a protective film over the screen of certain
electronic devices. Only one sheet of paper was included in the shipping box
and it's a packing list according to my KNFB Reader scan. No instructions
were provided.

8. The top of the unwrapped iPhone box pulls up smoothly. Sitting on
the very top over the iPhone itself is a cardboard sleeve containing 3
items, a sheet the same size as the iPhone with miniscule print with
absolutely no contrast, a more durable sheet which appears to have a picture
of the iPhone shown partially on the front and back with little information
I could discern, and a clear film sheet the size of the phone with two Apple
stickers on it. I have no clue what these stickers are for other than to
stick on a notebook or such thing to advertise your Apple support.

9. The iPhone is next and lifts straight up. It has a protective film
around it with a tab that can be used to grasp and pull it up if need be.
With this tab toward the bottom of the box, below the iPhone in the bottom
cutout, is the lightning AC plug. In the top cutout is the wired lightning
earpods housed in a square cardboard package which lifts up using a
cardboard tab. On the underside of this cardboard housing is the lightning
to 3.5mm headphone adapter sort of crimped into the cardboard underside.
Just below the lightning earpods container is a circular bottommost area
holding the lightning USB cable.

10. Being the exceedingly cautious geek that I am, I put the iPhone 7 in a
Tech21 Evo Check case to offer protection while setting it up.

11. Powered on the iPhone and could make out the word hello presented on
the very bright screen. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and heard
Voiceover on. Home is no longer a real button and is driven by a haptic
engine. With the iPhone 7 default home button setting, it felt more like the
phone was shifting in its case than like a button being pressed. I'll change
the home button setting later.

12. The iPhone screen turned off while I was typing this but with the
default setting, it automatically awakens when lifted up. Voiceover
announces "press home to open".

13. Select your language was announced and English was listed first and I
double tapped while it had focus.

14. Select your country or region was announced and I double tapped on
United States which was first in the list.

15. Choose a Wi-Fi network heading was announced and I double tapped on
the appropriate one.

16. My wi-fi network is secured so I was prompted to enter the password.
Be aware that you will be in standard typing mode instead of touch typing
mode so you should use your rotor and change it as appropriate. I spent a
few minutes entering letters before I realized that nothing was being
populated in the text field since I was entering using touch typing
practices but it was not yet truned on.

17. I received a message that activation was not successful although I'm
pretty sure the password was correct. As I recall, Jonathan Mosen also got
such a failure in his Blindside podcast where he unboxed his iPhone 7 Plus.
While I was typing this and with no further action on my part, a screen
headed Activation came up asking me to confirm my phone number which was
correctly stated. I double tapped the next button in the upper right corner.

18. I was taken to a second Activation screen asking me for my billing zip
code and the last four digits of my social security number which are
required by Verizon Wireless. I entered these using the number pad which
popped up at the bottom of the screen and double tapped the upper right next
button.

19. Got a screen saying "activating your iPhone" repeatedly. This took a
few seconds.

20. Got a Location Services screen with an enable location services button
toward the bottom middle which I double tapped. A back button was at the top
left for those not wanting to enable location services.

21. Got a place your finger screen to set up Touch ID. I got several place
your finger, lift your finger screens until I received a complete screen
that Touch ID was successful. I double tapped on the continue button in the
bottom center of the screen.

22. Got a create a passcode screen to set up the code needed in addition
to the Touch ID fingerprint. The default format of this passcode was a
6-digit code so I double tapped on the passcode options button just above
the on screen keypad at the bottom and selected the format I wanted and
entered the code. A confirmation screen came up to re-enter the passcode
which I did.

23. A screen headed absent data opened and presented buttons to restore
from iCloud backup, restore from iTunes backup, set up as new iPhone, or
move data from Android and I double tapped on restore from iTunes backup.

24. I got a screen asking me to connect to iTunes with a picture showing
the lightning cable being plugged into the iPhone. I plugged in the cable
and was taken to iTunes which I already had running. iTunes had a screen
saying Welcome to your new iPhone with two radio button choices to setup as
new iPhone or restore from this backup which was already selected with the
most recent backup made in step 4 above listed. I executed the continue
button.

25. iTunes showed an iPhone Software License Agreement with an I have read
and agree to tick box below it which I had to tick before the continue
button would undim and be selected which I did.

26. I apparently got an iPhone 7 running a version of iOS earlier than
10.1.1 because I received a message saying the backup could not be restored
because the iPhone was running a version older than that in the backup. To
restore, the message said I would first have to set it up as a new iPhone,
update it to the latest version, and then restore the iTunes backup.

27. I double tapped the back button to return to the absent data screen
where I double tapped the setup as new iPhone button.

28. Got a screen headed Apple ID where I entered my Apple ID and password.

29. Since my Apple ID is set up with two factor authentication, my iPhone
6 received a text message with the 6 digit code that I entered on the iPhone
7 screen to proceed.

30. Got a terms and conditions screen which I agreed with by double
tapping on the agree button in the bottom right corner.

31. Got an in progress screen saying it may take a few minutes to set up
your Apple ID. This took about 5 minutes and I was taken back to the Apple
ID screen where I double tapped next and had to go through the 2-factor
authentication process again.

32. Got the Pay with Touch ID screen to set up my existing credit card
already in my Apple profile. I had to confirm by entering the 3 digit
security code.

33. I got another terms and conditions screen where I double tapped the
agree button at the bottom right.

34. Got a Siri screen where I double tapped the set up Siri button. This
setup was 5 screens where I had to say Hey Siri on three of the screens, say
Hey Siri, how's the weather on screen 4, and say Hey Siri, It's me on screen
5. Got a Hey Siri is ready message and double tapped on a continue button
to finish the setup.

35. Got a Diagnostics screen where I double tapped the Send to Apple
button to allow diagnostics and usage data to be automatically sent to
Apple.

36. Got an App Analytics screen where I double tapped the Share with App
Developers button to allow this sharing.

37. Got a Meet the new Home Button screen where I double tapped get
started to customize the home button. I selected option 3 and double tapped
next.

38. Got a zoom screen selection screen where I selected standard instead
of zoom.

39. Got a Welcome to iPhone screen with the standard screen of icons
presented. I noticed that Messages had been swapped with Mail so that
Messages is in the dock and Mail is the first icon on the screen.

40. I opened Settings and was told that iOS 10.1.1 was downloaded and I
double tapped install now and had to enter my passcode to proceed.

41. The update installation began and the phone displayed the Apple logo
with a small progress bar below it indicating the progress. This took about
5 minutes and I was then prompted to key in my passcode again.

42. I returned to iTunes to restart the restore. The radio button was
still selected but when I executed the continue button, I was told I had to
turn off Find my iPhone which apparently was selected as part of the default
new iPhone setup. I went into settings, iCloud, Find my iPhone and turned it
off which required my entering my Apple ID password. I then selected
continue on the iTunes restore screen where I had to paste my encrypted
iTunes password from my clipboard again and then the iTunes restore began.
The iPhone gave a Restore in progress message from Voiceover and iTunes
displayed a restore progress bar. I got an iTunes message that I had to
enter my passcode on my locked iPhone before the restore upgrade could
proceed. I had to enter my passcode a couple of times before receiving the
iPhone was updated successfully message followed by there are just a few
more steps.

43. My default voice was changed to something that sounded like Eloquence
instead of the high quality Samantha I had before but I will change that in
the settings. I then had to enter my Apple ID password yet again which I
did.

44. Got an updating iCloud settings screen.

45. Got the pay with Touch ID screen again where I entered my security
code for the card on file after I double tapped next.

46. Got the Hey Siri setup screen like I did previously when setting up a
new iPhone and went through the 5 screens again.

47. Got the new home button setup screen again where I selected option 3
and doubled tapped next.

48. I had to go into settings, general, accessibility, voiceover, speech,
and download Samantha enhanced which was my default voiceover voice. I also
lowered the volume setting in my rotor from 55% to 15 % to get the volume at
about the same level on this iPhone 7 to that of my iPhone 6 which had only
one speaker in mono.

49. I executed the Apply button in iTunes which started a sync with the
iPhone 7 and all my apps were fairly quickly downloaded to the new phone.
Before initiating this sync, each app had a will install button next to it
in the list which changed to a remove button after the sync. All music and
other items were synced.
