Hi Don, I believe you were looking in the wrong place. What you describe is in Settings > General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing. The place where you have to go if you want to disable automatic switching is Settings > General > Accessibility > Voiceover > Audio (it’s between “Braille” and “Rotor”. Turn off “Audio select speaker in call” if you don’t want the call to automatically switch to speakerphone. Description is given as: “During audio calls, automatically switch to the speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear”. I hope a few others write to Apple Accessibility about this because they should just fix it to make it work as it is intended to work because for a blind person it is a nice feature if it works correctly.

I looked at this setting in IOS10 and it looks like the choices are automatic, speaker, or bluetooth headset. I see no setting to force it to go and stay on the built in earpiece. If you upgrade you can set it to not switch automatically. It seems that if I don't hold my head or the phone at the right position, it keeps switching . Personally, I find it very annoying!
