I agree with Michael on the best way to use built-in phone keyboard, and on the idea that a bluetooth keyboard is the next step up if you can carry it around with you.

That helped my speed a lot as you only enter characters when you lift your finger off the screen after getting the right letter. You eventually develop a kind of muscle memory and land on the right letter without having to slide your finger around for it. I still like the feedback of hearing the letter I type. There's also a direct touch typing mode where touching the letter will enter it without any feedback. I don't find that method practical for me. For more lengthy writing, I have a portable Bluetooth keyboard. There are lots of these. I prefer the Microsoft Universal Mobile keyboard. It's rigid enough to use on your lap and 85% the size of a full keyboard. It's protected by a sturdy cover which closes over the keyboard like a book. That cover can also turn on the keyboard when it opens, is magnetically attached and can serve as a tray for an iPHONE or stand for a tablet.
