OK, I just tried this. What eventually worked for me several times in calling myself from my home phone, was to push the top round button on the side, not the dock rectangular button. After pushing the top round button, an Answer button appeared on the screen. Single finger double tapping on that answered the call. The Answer button changed to an End button, and single finger double tapping this ended the call. There is also a Mute button to the right of the End button.
