Louanna already mentioned that. I had not ever used the expand thread and frankly didn’t even know it was there. I thought I would save the list and research it on my own. Well, I think I’ll ask here next time since Apple didn’t even suggest that easy way to do this.

Once you double tap on that you can flick right through all messages in the thread and use the normal swipe down or up just like on a single message to put focus on Delete, double tap and you are only deleting that message. I couldn't figure out how to delete messages from a thread without deleting the entire thread. The only way I could find was to turn off threading, then delete the messages I didn't want to keep, then turn threading back on. I first wrote to Apple accessibility, but the steps they gave me didn't really work, though If I had kept swiping right, they probably would have, but I ran out of patience with swiping. I will explain that later. I called Apple Accessibility, and found a very helpful guy. He couldn't figure it out either. He then talked with the guy who had responded to my Email. He still was having difficulty. Then, I accidentally deleted a single message but had no idea how. I found another thread, and found that if I followed the steps on this one, after 13 swipes to the right, yes, count them, 13; I found the more actions button. Double tapped, and then I could trash the one message. I found a shorter way. Partly, because another message I tried that with I probably would have had to swipe a lot more than 13 times. The shorter way, is to follow these steps. Open the thread. Make sure the rotor is on messages. Flick down to the message you want to delete from the thread. Now, touch at the bottom left corner on Mark message--do not double tap--just touch to get focus there. Flick left once, then flick right twice, and you will be on the More Actions button. Double tap. You will have these choices: Reply, Flag, Trash. Double tap on Trash, and only that one message will be deleted. The man I spoke with is going to write this up and suggest they at the very least make the instructions more clear. I'm hoping they can just make that More Actions button easier to get to.
