I'm running iOS 10.2 and when I double tap on compose, I am in the to field and have to enter the person I'm writing. If there is a back button in the upper left, you are still replying to a conversation. Make sure the first button on the screen is either edit, or just the "messages" heading, followed by the compose button. HTH, Richard
