This is actually the way I suggested those who wanted to know what channel was playing what show could do things. As for the direct TV now app, you are almost there. But instead of swiping left to right, go to guide press the track pad, swipe twice to the right, then swipe up and down, this will give you the ahem of the shows that are on so you can choose from them.
