Hi, Everyone. I need to replace my Braille display. I have a 40-cell BrailleEdge that went in for repair over the month of December. While it was in the shop, VR loaned me an Apex, which also had problems with its cells, but I could still use it because it gave speech feedback.
Hims sent e-mail regarding what needs replacement. In order to replace a Braille cell, it will cost $70--not sure if by cell they mean a single pin, or the eight dots that make up the space under say, position one on a line of Braille. I have enough weak cells to warrant replacing the Braille display--counselor says the price difference between repair and replace is minimal, so replacement with anew unit, especially if it can be gotten with an extended warranty, seems a better choice. I asked about the possibility of getting a notetaker with speech output and display, vs. just a display on its own. He says the notetakers don't use up-to-date operating systems. My main reason for considering a notetaker over a display is because of the speech feedback you can get re dot configuration of Braille characters. Is this same thing possible with VO? For example, if one of my cells goes out and I need to check dot configuration, would I be able to import the file in to an app that supports Braille-ready files and go through the file to the point in question and get "for" for the 123456 Braille character? I use different Braille codes depending on the task at hand, hence the reference to "non-literary" in the subject line. I hope this post makes sense.
