The first time you run NeoReader, after you get through the screens that tell you about it and give it permission to use the camera, you double tap on where it says “scan heading.” Even though that doesn’t say it is a button, that will refresh its attempt to scan. Then, you will need to point it at a bar code, QR code, etc., and be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches away and hold steady for a few seconds. At least on my 5S that is what it took.
Now, it does not seem to have much of a database. But, once you find out what an item is, you can enter it in the title field and double tap on done, then the next time you scan that product it will show that title. VoiceOver does not automatically read the title. I tried 4 items and compared with Digit-eyes. The first was Trader Joe’s peppermint toothpaste. Neither one new what that was, but that isn’t surprising since Trader Joes is not all over the place. I then tried a bottle of Kroger acetaminophen. NeoReader did not know it, but Digit-Eyes did. I then tried a bottle of Casey’s Master Blend barbecue sauce, original. NeoReader did not know it but Digit-eyes did. I then tried a box of Nabisco wheat thins. Again, NeoReader did not know it, but Digit-eyes did. NeoReader is pretty fast at spotting the code. And, if you create your own QR code labels for yourself, I suppose it would be pretty useful. However, Digit-Eyes for $9.95 is just continually getting better and better and is still, hands down, the best bar code scanner app for the visually impaired in my humble opinion.
