Since I ran across an old friend who was (probably still is) a ham radio operator, I thought I'd mention I just came across a multi-meter device with bluetooth, which transmits it's readings to a smartphone app, which will speak them and/or record them. You can find it at http://redfishinstruments.com and it's their IDVM (and their app is the IDVM2 in the app store). I think it's the only thing they make/sell. The app is free and the device is $150.
