I recall I got rid of those nasty install errors by following an article's advice about first downloading an older version of the Windows uninstaller. Something like 3.0 or so and removing some bogus or corrupt iTunes installation files and then trying to run the iTunes update. It worked as directed. I no longer have that article or remember where it was where I grabbed the old Windows tool, but it only took me a couple of Internet searches to come up with the information. It thankfully fixed all those annoying iTunes installation problems for me. I've since migrated to Windows 7 and haven't had any of those issues.

Find out the name of the program used to compile the installer, (probably the Windows installer) and then start browsing through the forums and Microsoft articles. Copy as much of the exact error as you can and keep it handy, you'll need it. Good luck with this one, it's a pretty hairy problem! Apparently there should be a file, iTunes.msi, somewhere in a directory which iTunes use to uninstall the previous version. For some unknown reason this directory got deleted on my PC and now The latest version can not install because it needs that file. I tried to copy the iTunes.msi from my laptop but it is a later version of iTunes that is on my PC, so the install does not accept it. I can't believe that Apple makes it so difficult and I don't want to format the drive and install everything just to get iTunes going again. I tried to delete all the stuff concerning Apple and iTunes but the install does not handle it as a first install. Can anyone think of a solution?
