Hi Mike,

I know changing email addresses nowadays can be a big deal, but I think getting
an email address from Outlook, Google, Apple or Yahoo (not a big fan of Yahoo
as they seem to have lots of security issues) is the way to go compared to have
an email address from your provider. For one thing if you ever change your
internet service provider you’ll get a new email anyways so taking that step
and get yourself an Outlook.com email address is I think a good idea as you’ll
have that for the rest of your life. Also, there is no pressure since you can
of course set up both email addresses in Outlook, then first start by putting
all the contacts you have in your original account into Outlook. Yes, I would
start by using Outlook (the app not the service), after you get your
Outlook.com email address just set it up as a new account. It should be easy if
you use Office 2013 or 2016 since they have built-in support for this and all
you have to enter is your email address and password, there is no need to put
in incoming and outgoing server addresses and al that as Outlook will
automatically configure that.
Once you have that done, also set up the Outlook.com email on your iPhone, make
sure you pick “Outlook.com” or whatever it’s called as the account type on the
first scren after you double tap on “Add account”. Then again just enter your
email and password and, if you like, you can give the account a name or you can
leave it as is.
Once that is done just see if everything works by going into your old account
on Outlook on the computer, go to the contacts and use the Control+Shift+V
command to “Move” a contact. Pick the Contacts folder under your new outlook
account and press enter. Then wait a minute or two and check your iPhone to see
if that contact is there. If you already have it manually entered on your
iPhone, you could maybe create a new contact in Outlook on your computer and
check that, if it syncs and it appears on your iPhone you can do it the other
way around just to make sure, create a contact (you can just make one up called
“Test-iPhone”) and see if it appears in Contacts on your computer. You can also
send a test email, if you send one on the computer that email should also be in
the Sent Items folder on your iPhone. If you receive an email and read it on
the iPhone it should also get marked as read on the PC and if you reply on
either device it should indicate that on the other device. Yes, Calendar should
also sync, when you set up the account on the iPhone it asks as a last step
what you want to sync and it gives you a list you have to make sure is selected
like Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notes etc.

Good luck, let me know if you have other questions.

Hey Sieghard,
That sounds like the answer for me.
So I can set up an online Outlook email account? Then run that through my
laptop’s Outlook program?
Then both my outlook calendar and contacts will completely sync with my IPhone?

I use Outlook.com for my email and since I have it set up on my iPhone and all
my computers as an exchange active sync account whatever I do on one device
syncs and is reflected on all devices. Often when I’m at my desk and I want to
add a contact I do it via Outlook on my computer and usually the contact is
available on my iPhone 10 or 20 seconds later. Same goes the other way around,
if I’m out and about and I add somebody as a contact on my phone, they are in
my contact list in Outlook by the time I get back.
Of course Outlook.com is not alone here, you should be able to do the same with
gmail which uses IMAP and, for that matter, on anyother service that uses IMAP.

Regards,
Sieghard

I know I can forward an appointment out of my Laptop’s Outlook calendar and
email it to myself.
Then it’s very easy to get that same appointment into my IPhone’s calendar.
But I’m lost when it comes to my contacts. I just manually input them into my
IPhone. It sucks big time!

I have a Windows 10 laptop. Getting things to sync won’t be the problem
because if I can’t do it with Jaws my sighted wife will set things up. I just
don’t want to end up with a phone that has no contacts to match my computer
since my computer is newer than the contacts on my phone.

Do you have a mac computer, or a PC?
Apple computers are a breeze to sync with an IPhone.
But with a PC, it’s a royal PITA and a half.
I’m still trying to figure out how to sync my Lenovo laptop’s Outlook contacts,
into my 5S.
Apples and oranges for sure. They don’t like to play nice together!

Hi,

Will syncing my contacts on my IPhone with my new computer have the effect of
moving them from my IPhone to the computer? My computer currently has no
contacts.

Thanks.
