Nerby Explorer has been one of the best apps I have used. It's a bit expensive, but I honestly don't regret buying it. It certainly helps out with unfamiliar areas. I've used it once or twice during a time like that. It's very handy, despite the price. Oh yeah, it does rquire at least 4 gigs of your device space to work properly when downloading the maps and the like.
