Hi all, At the moment, I have an Apple Music subscription, but not an iTunes Match subscription. I used to be subscribed to iTunes Match, but canceled the subscription some time ago.
Anyway, I have a MacBook Air with an empty iTunes library (no tracks downloaded to the machine). I’ve signed into my iCloud music library on the machine, and I see that the iCloud status for the majority of tracks is “Apple Music”, meaning those songs have DRM. Sure enough, when I download most of the tracks (even songs I extracted from my own CDs prior to the introduction of Apple Music) they are protected tracks and can’t be played in any other app. Weirdly, though, about one in every ten tracks shows as “matched”, meaning I can download a version from Apple without DRM, or “uploaded”, meaning I can download the original formats I added to iTunes over the years. Most confusingly, some tracks won’t play on either iOS or MacOS, and their iCloud status is “no longer available” which means that they’re no longer available for streaming or downloading by Apple Music subscribers. But again, these are songs I added to my library before I ever subscribed to Apple Music. It’s been difficult to find any official info on the different behaviour of Apple Music versus iTunes Match for matched songs. This Apple support article<https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204146> just says "If you're an Apple Music member, you don't need to subscribe to iTunes Match unless you still need to access your music on an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd Generation).” This MacWorld article<http://www.macworld.com/article/2943703/how-itunes-match-and-apple-music-work-together.html> from July 2015 says that you do need to subscribe to iTunes Match, even if you have an Apple Music subscription, if you want to download tracks without DRM. But that wouldn’t explain why there are occasional “matched” tracks in my library. Does anyone have experience with this?
