If your device baks up to iCloud automatically then this should not be an issue. Mine does, and before I update to the new iOS, I will definitely check to make sure I have a recent backup, but I have my phone set to automatically backup which usually happens over night. Also, if you run low on free iCloud storage, note that 50 gigs is only $0.99 per month.
