I installed the light version and it found my network and my external drives
without me having to do much at all. I did not have to go through manual set
up or anything. With the lite version, it lets you listen to a small
sampling of a file/files and then suggests for you to purchase the full
version, which I intend to do. This app is GREAT!

I would just leave the password field blank. I would think that would work.
You could try with File Browser Light first before spending out on the paid
version.

I've been having a play with File Browser. If you want to connect to your
pc, then it will ask for your name. So, in my case my username on my PC
was Carla. The password is the password you use to log into your PC. All
works great and I find it a really useful App. I have now also managed to
connect to an external drive. Just need to share permissions and then
double tap the letter of the drive when you connect to your PC as it will
show up after successful connection.

right to menu. Double tap on menu, and choose Share this file, and
double tap their. You will see Open in different programs, but you want
to look for simply whatsapp. You may have to go to more, and look for
