Hi,

I just logged in and did not find it difficult to locate the button to turn off
two-factor authentication. I assume what you may have missed is the fact that
after you log in at http://appleid.apple.com you can't change anything until
you activate the "Edit" button for the area you want to change, e.g. for the
personal information area, the security area etc.
If you start at the top of the page and use the quick nav key for buttons it
would be the second edit button as the first applies to changes to your
personal information.
Once I activated this edit button I had the option to change my password and
the last date when I changed it was displayed, it was able to add another
trusted phone number and, as I said, in the two-factor security section a
button to "turn off two-factor authentication" was available. I didn't do this,
but I understand that if you do this you have to select 3 new security
questions and provide answers and maybe there is another step, but changing the
password as far as I can tell is not required. Here is an Apple support article
about two-factor authentication:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204915

In the frequently asked questions area one of the questions is "Can I turn off
two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?"
The answer given is "You can't turn off two-factor authentication for some
accounts created in iOS 10.3 or macOS Sierra 10.12.4 and later. If you created
your Apple ID in an earlier version of iOS or macOS, you can turn off
two-factor authentication.

In other words, if you create a new Apple Id using iOS 10.3 and later or macOS
Sierra 10.12.4 and later, it appears people are stuck with two-factor
authentication, but if you had your Apple Id for some time as most of us have
you should be OK. I also assume that since this is not mentioned that if you
create an Apple Id using a PC you should be OK and able to turn off two-factor
authentication.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard

I believe there must be another step to fulfill: changing password. I did like
you said and noticed 2stepverifications is on for my account but there is no
way to turn it off once logged in.
I think you have to change the password of the account to do so.

Davy

Why is .iCloud more proprietory than .me? I guess she can always set up a gmail
or outlook account, but then again they are all proprietory just as are those
from various providers as they all have the provider's domain. I guess you
could go and register your own domain, but that is a lot of work and some cost
to go through for an email address.

Sieghard

I did, she didn't, now won't as she don't want such a proprietory domain.

Thanks everso, BobH.

Hi Bob,

If you created an account with one of Apple's earlier services, that address
will still work, which is why me.com <http://me.com/>
addresses work. I'm pretty sure that if you're creating an account now,
though, it will be iCloud. I don't think there are any other
options.

Best,
Anna
