You need to look for WiFi capable thermostats, I have never seen one that works
via bluetooth since typically the idea behind connected thermostats is that you
can control them also when you are not at home and of course bluetooth only
works when you are nearby and in larger houses it is quite likely you could be
in a room downstairs or upstairs or at one end of the house where you wouldn’t
be able to connect to your thermostat via bluetooth.
Having said this the Nest Thermostat has been mentioned. I heard from others
who have it that you can certainly adjust the temperature but that setting up a
schedule is either not very accessible or inaccessible at this point.
I use the WiFi enabled thermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com<http://www.RadioThermostat.com> and I have two of these
at my retail store and one at home and they work reliably and well. I have had
them now for probably 5 or 6 years, the app is updated regularly but not
frequently and while setting a schedule is also not the most intuitive way for
a blind person it is possible.
Would I buy them again if I bought new thermostats now? Probably not simply
because I would now look for a thermostat which supports Home Kit and these do
not and it is my understanding from an email I sent to the company a couple of
years ago that they don’t plan to support it.
This is also the reason why I probably would not buy the Nest product, Nest is
Google and I doubt they will support home kit and I have nor do I plan to get
either an Amazon Echo or a Google Home speaker which would allow me voice
control.
The good thing is that the thermostats used by RadioThermostat are relatively
inexpensive compared to Nest and others, I have heard from others that you can
often pick one up from Home Depot for $99 US.
The reason why I would be looking for one that supports Home Kit is of course
because it would be nice to use SIRI to simply tell it to set the temperature a
certain way, but also because Home Kit has fairly high security standards
compared to some other “Internet of Things” devices. We all know how many of
these devices have been hacked and used in denial of service attacks and so on
so while I like the convenience I would at least want the best security
possible.
I suggest you check in the Apple Store app, there are I think at least a couple
of options listed there under home automation.

Sieghard

Subject: Inquiring About Bluetooth Enabled Home Thermostats

I’m considering replacing a pair of programmable home thermostats with
bluetooth enabled thermostats. Can anybody here offer any suggestions as to
the physical thermostats and iOS apps that would offer full access to reading
current temps, setting temps and possibly programming a daily cycle of temps?
